Large roof terrace for 37 Degrees Gym and Health Club
Our client had opened a new gym in converted building in West London and they had the good fortune to have a fantastic very large roof space (around 400 square metres in total) which they wanted to open up for their members to use. The views from the roof are wonderful but, as the terrace is high, wind and exposure to all kinds of weather is an issue.
Once all the building regulations and health and safety issues had been complied with, Charlotte Rowe Garden Design was asked to create a multi-purpose space – it was to have an area which could be used for classes, a small space which could be converted at a future date to a space for beauty treatments and relaxation, a mobile cafe area, some loungers. It had to look good during the day and, importantly, at night. Not only could members use it as a sun terrace, but it would also be used for hospitality events.
Charlotte Rowe Garden Design created a large raised deck area which could be used for classes or simply as an area for events. The rest of the space was to be used for the cafe/sitting area with tables and chairs and sun loungers.
Planters were designed in dark anthracite steel and planted with a range of plants which could withstand exposure to strong sun and wind. These included gold stemmed bamboo as screening to the South West and a number of clear stemmed olive trees under-planted with creeping thyme as well as Buxus cubes interspersed with grasses (Pennisetum ‘Hameln’ and Stipa tenuissima).
At night the space is spectacular – with uplighters under all the trees, exterior cube lights between the loungers and colour change uplights in the decking.
