Somerset garden
This 1½ acre garden is being created within the context of a working farmyard and outbuildings of a farm in Somerset. The original 17th century farmhouse built in local Somerset stone and some of the original stables and farm buildings are now being turned into a six bedroom family house. Some of the outbuildings have been taken down to create a large area between the house and the existing swimming pool ideal for a walled garden.
Charlotte Rowe Garden Design was commissioned to design and re-landscape the whole site including the walled garden, a potager/vegetable garden, an orchard, a new drive and car parking areas and the rest of the garden down to the old mill. In the new design, the swimming pool is flanked by low level planting on three sides with a raised terrace and a pool pavilion / secondary dining area on the North side. The walled garden also has a formal lawn and three terrace areas and views down to the fields and the mill.
The potager has been placed to the North towards the existing farm buildings and is nestled amongst a nuttery and orchard. The drive is formalised with new trees and verge planting of wild flowers and bulbs leading to a newly created parking area surrounded by wildflower meadows.
The designs are currently being implemented and the garden will be completed in late 2011.
